SUMMARY:Larry Meistrich - Producers Panel
DESCRIPTION:Award winning producer Larry Meistrich and his new production
company Nehst Studios is changing the film industry as we know it\, as
they are dedicated to providing access to emerging\, undiscovered talent
and in seeking interactive new methods and technology to engage the aud
ience in the film experience. As a visionary in today’s film industry\,
Meistrich is a perfect addition to the line up for the 9th annual Sacra
mento Film & Music Festival. \n\nThe region’s longest running all-genre
independent film festival is scheduled for Friday August 8th through Sun
day August 17th\, and on Saturday August 9th\, Meistrich will present a
screening of ‘Running The Sahara’\, a historic and riveting documentary
film that his company is promoting and distributing\, (while a ‘sequel’
film “Running America” is launching filming production out of the Bay Ar
ea at the same time - see www.RunnngAmerica08.com). The screening will
be immediately followed by a presentation from Meistrich about the futur
e of filmmaking\, and he will share how his company is positioned to lea
d the way into the changing industry. \n\nNehst Studios has secured a $
250 million film fund and is actively seeking new scripts and film talen
t to fill a slate of upcoming productions\, and on Sunday August 10th\,
Meistrich will also hold one-on-one pitch sessions on for filmmakers and
writers who wish to present their best script / story idea for financin
g and/or production consideration. Meistrich was so impressed with his
last visit to Sacramento (during the 2007 Sac Film & Music Festival\, a
nd again at his 3-day filmmaker’s boot camp in Nov. 2007)\, with four wr
iter/filmmakers being offered possible development deals\, that he was v
ery excited to come back again… Meistrich added “A typical percentage o
f potentially good film scripts and talent seen at any given pitch sessi
on across the country is about 30%\, and in Sacramento it was closer to
60-70%!” \n\nJoining Meistrich is Supervising Producer Antonia Ellis (S
ex and the City\, Men in Trees\, etc.) who will be on hand to discuss he
r roles in mega hit television productions and her new role with Nehst S
tudios. Writers and filmmakers that are interested in scheduling an app
ointment for the pitch sessions can go to www.pitchnehst.com to register
or an individual appointment. Note: There is a $10 administrative fee)
. \n\nMeistrich has proven that he is well prepared to recognize new tal
ent and lead the changing film industry into the technical ages to come.
In 1990\, at the age of 24\, Larry Meistrich\, with just $7\,000\, foun
ded The Shooting Gallery (TSG). In his triple role as Founder\, Chairman
of the Board\, and Executive Officer of TSG\, Meistrich was hands-on pr
oducer and an integral part of the production of roughly 100 films\, com
mercials and music videos including the Academy Award-winning "Sling Bla
de" and the Academy Award nominated "You Can Count on Me". Meistrich mad
e industry history when Thornton's "Sling Blade" was purchased by Mirama
x for a price that broke all previous sale records in independent film.
\nMeistrich's other well-known films include Cannes winner "Henry Fool\,
" Clive Owen's breakout film "Croupier\," and "Belly." His pictures have
won the gamut of international awards including the Academy's Oscar and
include Golden Globes\, SAG Award\, DGA Award\, Top Five category award
s at Cannes\, Sundance\, Berlin. Actors and directors Meistrich has prod

ornton. \nMeistrich was also the founder and CEO of Film Movement\, a gr
oundbreaking DVD-of-the-month club that releases films in theaters and o
n DVD at the same time. By creating a new distribution model\, Meistrich
provided audiences everywhere access to award-winning films that usuall
y only play in select markets like Los Angeles and New York. He received
the 1998 Crain's Small Business Award and the 1999 Ernst and Young Entr

SUMMARY:Crazy
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the life of Hank Garland\, CRAZY is the story of
a legendary guitar player who emerged from Nashville in the 1950’s. Bles
sed with incomparable\, natural talent\, Hank quickly established his re
putation as the finest session player in Nashville. Artists such as Roy
Orbison\, Patsy Cline\, The Everly Brothers and Elvis all sought Hank fo
r their recordings. Moving effortlessly from country\, to rock-a-billy\,
to jazz\, Hank was also recognized by the likes of Dave Bruebeck\, Gary
Burton\, Joe Morello and Joe Benjamin. The 50's Nashville scene was uni
que – dominated by a group of executives and musicians who controlled th
e industry. Hank\, in his pursuit of musical excellence\, often came int
o conflict with the business\, which he found restrictive and frustratin
 g. But it was his relationship with his wife\, Evelyn\, which may have l
ed to his demise.Beautiful\, Evelyn was unlike any woman Hank had ever e
ncountered when meeting her during a show in Chicago. She excited and fa
scinated him\, and turned a whirlwind romancae into an almost instant ma
rriage. But Evelyn was not all she appeared to be\, and when confronted
with the reality of Hank’s obsessive dedication to his music\, began to
demonstrate a desperate need to make him love only her. But 43 years aft
er Hank disappeared from music\, his guitar lives on in a number of hit
records\, and one\, amazing solo jazz effort.

SUMMARY:Split: A Divided America
DESCRIPTION:SPLIT: A DIVIDED AMERICA is a concerned citizen’s unbiased lo
ok at the partisanship that dominates American politics today. Balancing
candid discussions with citizens all across the country and commentary
from some of the sharpest minds analyzing government and society today\,
the film journeys coast to coast exploring why civil discourse has disa
ppeared from our civic landscape and how polarization has risen to contr
ol our political experience.Featuring Robert Putnam\, Norm Ornstein\, Tu
cker Carlson\, Noam Chomsky\, Thomas Frank\, Jesse Jackson and others\,
SPLIT: A DIVIDED AMERICA goes far beyond the familiar headlines that red
uce us to a nation of ‘Red vs. Blue’\, ‘Heartland versus the Coasts’ an
d ‘Liberals vs. Conservatives - it uncovers the political\, social and e
conomic factors behind our growing frustration with the election process
. From living rooms to classrooms to places of work and places of worshi
p\, SPLIT: A DIVIDED AMERICA asked Americans from all walks of life what
divides us so deeply at this critical point in our history. And what we
can do about it. By bringing the polarization into clear and unforgivin
g focus\, SPLIT: A DIVIDED AMERICA provides a very necessary and timely
snapshot of who we are as a nation. With this fresh perspective\, it is
the filmmaker’s hope that we will be able to better navigate the upcomin
g election - one already on target to deepen the partisan divide more th
 an ever before.

SUMMARY:Uncounted: The New Math of American Elections
DESCRIPTION:UNCOUNTED is an explosive new documentary that shows how the
election fraud that changed the outcome of the 2004 election led to even
greater fraud in 2006 - and now looms as an unbridled threat to the out
come of the 2008 election. This controversial feature length film by Emm
 y award-winning director David Earnhardt examines in factual\, logical\,
and yet startling terms how easy it is to change election outcomes and
undermine election integrity across the U.S. Noted computer programmers\
, statisticians\, journalists\, and experienced election officials provi
de the irrefutable proof.\n\nUNCOUNTED shares well documented stories ab
out the spine-chilling disregard for the right to vote in America. In Fl
orida\, computer programmer Clint Curtis is directed by his boss to crea
te software that will “flip” votes from one candidate to another. In Uta
h\, County Clerk Bruce Funk is locked out of his office for raising ques
tions about security flaws in electronic voting machines. Californian St
eve Heller gets convicted of a felony after he leaks secret documents de
tailing illegal activities committed by a major voting machine company.
And Tennessee entrepreneur\, Athan Gibbs\, finds verifiable voting a har
d sell in America and dies before his dream of honest elections can be r
ealized. \n\nUNCOUNTED is a wakeup call to all Americans. Beyond increa
sing the public’s awareness\, the film inspires greater citizen involvem
ent in fixing a broken electoral system. As we approach the decisive ele
ction of 2008\, UNCOUNTED will change how you feel about the way votes a
 re counted in America.

SUMMARY:Let Others Suffer
DESCRIPTION:Todd finds a flyer for a feminist film festival on the same d
ay he finds a book by the renowned documentary filmmaker\, Ivan Libragi.
Newly inspired\, he reaches out to Libragi to help him in his quest to
make an epic film about the women in his family. Libragi finds Todd to
be an epic moron and offers to help him not at all\, but gleefully deci
des to end his 20-year hiatus as a filmmaker to document Todd?s heroic i
neptitude. A high-school classmate\, Rebecca\, is strangely eager to fr
ont the money for Todd?s project and head to points unknown. Suddenly\,
Todd has a mission\, money and a crew\, thanks to a local commercial di
rector\, Brandon\, and his bumbling assistant\, Greg. The gang then embar
ks on their Journey to Courage ? a trip to Spokane\, Washington where To
dd?s relatives live for some reason. Filled with a passion that only th
e truly ignorant can muster\, these ?documentarians? descend upon the po
or unsuspecting women in Todd?s family. Thanks to no particular skill\,
they stumble on the compelling story of the mysterious disappearance of
Todd?s grandfather. Despite the strange parallels to his own life\, To
dd somehow ignores the obvious pull of the story\, choosing instead to p
ursue his own asinine ideas. In the course of said pursuit\, Todd gets
blackmailed by his grandmother\, stripped of his funding\, and accused o
f kidnapping. Having lost his film\, his pride and the love of his life
\, Todd is pushed to the edge . . . literally.

SUMMARY:Familiar Voices
DESCRIPTION:The horrific and systematic murder of nearly half a million p
eople ceases to be a distant reality in this film about the ongoing geno
cide in Darfur. Dramatic first-hand accounts are interwoven with expert
analysis of the devastating situation\, and international activists off
er insight into the tangible options available for affecting change. Th
ese are the voices of people in action ? voices that represent a call fo
r peace that is essential to the human spirit.UNICEF Ambassador\, activi
st and actress Mia Farrow shares moving accounts of her many visits to t
he refugee camps in Southern Darfur\, Eastern Chad\, and the Central Afr
ican Republic. Together with these riveting stories\, Professor Eric Re
eves ? a 10-year Sudan researcher and activist ? offers a clear analysis
of the political climate of the region ? while Darfurians\, ranging fro
m an award-winning human rights leader on the ground to activist leaders
in the U.S.\, paint a vivid picture of life in Darfur before and after
the conflict broke out. Nobel Peace Prize winners\, legislators\, commu
nity leaders\, international activists\, college students and fifth grad
ers all join together to speak for those who cannot sit in front of a ca
mera today to tell their stories. They clearly convey the complexity the
crisis\, guide the audience toward many available resources\, and invit
e them to act now. Like those of the leaders that came before them\, th
ese ?Familiar Voices? inspire\, empower\, and call to effective action a
  new anti-genocide generation.
